IMSA North Educator Recognized for Completing Science of Reading Course Offered Through Indiana Department of Education in Collaboration with Marian University.

On September, 17th, Indiana Math and Science Academy North proudly honored one of its exceptional educators for her completion of the Science of Reading course offered through the Indiana Department of Education in collaboration with Marian University.

Superintendent Arslan, along with other key administrators, visited the IMSA North’s Emerging Bilingual Center, home of the IMSA North ELL Department, to surprise Mrs. Artemis Aghvami with a certificate of achievement in recognition of her completion of the Science of Reading course and dedication.

Ms. Artemis took a moment to discuss her role, the recognition she’s received from the IDOE, and gave some details about her department’s work at IMSA North.

Ms. Artemis, what is your role at IMSA North and can you briefly describe the work of your department at the school?

This is my fourth year working at IMSA North and my second year working as the ELL Coordinator and Team Lead. I work with a wonderful team of six educators supporting English Language Learners in K-12 and helping them achieve their academic goals. This is through effective collaboration with our great IMSA teachers.

Could you tell us about yourself?

I am originally from Iran and have been bilingual, speaking English since the age of four. I hold a BA in English Literature and an MA in TESOL, along with a Fellowship in Higher Education from the UK. My experience spans various roles, including teacher, Assistant Director of Studies, English Speaking Examiner, and Teacher Trainer for CELTA and Trinity College London. I have been working in this field since 1996.

How did you hear about the Science of Reading course and would you share one or two ideas/takeaways from the course?

As I mentioned before, I work with an amazing team of educators who have varying levels of teaching experience and are highly committed to ongoing professional development. My colleague, Mrs. Marines Corey, is an active member of Science of Reading Indiana, and together with other staff members, including Ms. Mara Edwards, we decided to take a course on the Science of Reading.  In the coursework we learned about evidence-based instructional practices using a Structured Literacy approach, with a focus on teaching and assessing foundational reading skills, vocabulary instruction, and comprehension instruction.

Would you like to share anything else with the IMSA North community?

I believe the most effective way to engage in professional development is as a team. We gained so much more from the experience through collaborative discussions in our office, reflecting on each module and how to apply the approaches taught by the Science of Reading. Another example of our teamwork toward shared goals is that we’ve already registered for the INTESOL 2024 Conference. It will cover a wide range of topics relevant to our field, and we’re excited to attend together in November!
