PLTW Biomedical Science Class

IMSA North offered a new course for High School Students this year, Project Lead The Way: Principles of Biomedical Science. Students in this course get introduced to a “death” of a fictional character on the first day of class and throughout the year go through all of the medical issues the character had while doing actual medical tests, and learning about the careers associated with the various tasks.

The students are thoroughly enjoying this task. We put up all our new information on the board, and revisit it frequently in attempt to understand what happened to the character. Other teachers have also played a part in this class, by playing the role of the suspects and allowing the students to question them. Students in this class have tested unknown substances to see what kind of drugs were found at the crime scene, blood splatter tests, and even macromolecule tests in order to see the contents of the fictional character’s stomach at the time of her death. It is a truly engaging course that goes through a variety of topics.
